The Drama Barn

The Drama Barn is our on-campus black box theatre venue where our almost 100 performances a year take place. The Barn has an audience capacity of 40 with moveable seating blocks to allow members to create different stage shapes for weekend shows. With a cosy backstage area, The Barn is also home to our costume, props and set store which are open to production teams to browse and use for their shows. Weekend shows also have the option to use flats across the backwall of the stage and build set pieces using our tools and resources.

With lights from conventionals to LEDs and movers you can really set the mood for any type of show. Weekend shows are even free to rig extra lights! Our venue also has a lovely sound system, which can be operated by Bluetooth or QLab. So come to Open Barn to get tech trained and learn more about our tech!

Our lovely venue is looked after by the dedicated Team Barn, consisting of the Internal Vice Chair, two Barn Managers, a Costume and Props Manager, and Internal and External Tech Managers. If you have any questions about the space or it’s uses, please don’t hesitate to get in contact!

Getting To The Barn

We are easily accessible by both car and public transport. Being based on the University of York West Campus, we are a short walk from UoY Central Campus Car Park – car parking is free from the hours of 6PM – 8AM most weekdays and weekends, so usually cover all our shows.

There are buses from the city centre and railway station approximately every 5 minutes during the day, and it takes around 20 minutes to reach the campus.

The UoY66 service runs from York railway station to Campus West, via the city centre – alight at the Library stop and walk back towards the information centre which is on the opposite side of the road where the main campus is.
